The Featherless Chicken

August 2nd, 2007 by Chris

chickenfeatherless1.jpgSo I just ran into this picture… I had no idea they did this. This mutation was created by a group of scientists at the genetics faculty at the Rehovot Agronomy Institute near Tel Aviv, Israel. What is this world coming to?

This newly created chicken is considered ‘convenient’ and ‘energy efficient’. ‘Energy efficient’ because these chickens can live in hot countries without cooling systems since they do not have their jackets on.

Chickens were already the most abused animals on he planet, and now they have learned to genetically modify them to look like this? This obviously leaves them more susceptible to parasites and mosquito attacks.

“The chicken is disgusting”, says Joyce D’Silva of Compassion in World Farming. “It’s a prime example of sick science and the suggestion that it would be an improvement for developing countries is obscene.”

I felt bad enough for the hairless guinea pigs (skinny pigs) at the pet store, but at least they aren’t hairless for easier eating. This is just pathetic.
