The popularity of organic fruit, vegetables, and other prepared foods has grown at a very rapid rate, about 20% annually. There now seems to be an organic version of almost every non-organic product. Many people are choosing to go organic because it reflects a healthy lifestyle. The majority of organic consumers swear it makes a difference.
Some studies have shown that many organic foods contain higher nutrient levels than their non-organic counterparts. It is also well known that pesticides are just not great for humans. Fruit and vegetables are to be well washed before consuming but I’m sure you really can’t wash everything away.
Here are just a few examples where the nutrients in organic foods have ranked higher than non-organic foods:
- Chromium is a micronutrient that is low in Western diets. Its deficiency is associated with the onset of adult diabetes and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Chromium was found to be higher in organic foods by an average of 78%.
- Selenium is one of the antioxidant nutrients that protects us from damage by environmental chemicals. It is protective against cancers and heart disease. It was found to be an average of 390% higher in organic foods.
- Calcium, needed for strong bones, averaged 63% higher in organics.
- Boron, which has been shown to help prevent osteoporosis (along with calcium), averaged 70% more.
- Lithium, which is used to treat certain types of depression, was 188% higher.
- Magnesium, which reduces mortality from heart attacks, keeps muscles from spasming, and eases the symptoms of PMS, averaged 138% more.

Choosing to buy organic is also better for the environment in my opinion. This is not believed by all, in part because organic fruit and veg requires a bit more room to grow the same amount as conventional methods. Non-organic farms use synthetic pesticides, which eventually find their way into near by lakes and streams. Not a good thing for anything living in those lakes and streams, and not good for anything drinking from them, like us.
Organic food cannot be genetically modified like non-organics are usually these days. Genetically modified crops cover more than 167 million acres worldwide. The great majority of these crops are found within the United States. Visit the following link to read a list of 50 harmful side effects of genetically modified foods. Click here
Obviously organic is the more natural choice. I also feel organic is the right choice, for everyone. The pros far outweigh the cons. Mother Nature hearts organic veg, and so should you.
