So the largest entertainment event in history has now come to a close. There was music, and monster crowds on six continents, and even a group of researchers down in Antarctica got involved so they were able to claim they hit all seven continents. The final tally is expected to confirm that at least two billion people tuned in. Live Earth was broadcast on television, on the net, and by radio.
It was definitely about time something like this was done. Al Gore is a hero to this earth, and if he decided to run for president I would be the most excited of all Canadians. He again said on the program that he has not ruled it out. He understands how much power the presidency could bring, but I have a feeling he will not. At least we know whoever does get elected can not possibly make things any worse.
This event and organization is Al Gore’s brainchild and you could say it was a monster success. I watched much of the event, which lasted more than 24 hours in total.
I must say, I did not learn a thing (I know how bleak things are, and I do my part), but I like to hope that the majority of the two billion people that watched Live Earth did. I am certain it reached some, but I truly believe those figures will be quite low considering. I fear the majority of viewers just wanted to see their favorite artists for free. I saw footage in Tokyo that only solidified that opinion. It showed a lady walking up to a trashcan just outside of the stadium with three styrofoam containers.
It is a good thing Live Earth is an organization that is not going to let our planet go down without a fight. They will not stop after one successful event. The message must be heard, and understood by all.
China is officially the most polluted country in the world now. I was watching Daily Planet on Discovery a couple of weeks ago, and they were doing a report on this town tucked in between dozens of factories. The air was thick and it just looked as if it was just extremely foggy. The reporter asked a lady there when the last time she saw a blue sky was. She replied and said she did not remember. The reporter then asked her what she thinks about how all of this pollution is affecting our planet. She laughed because she was convinced the pollution in their town, did not effect the rest of the world. She said something like, “How is supposed to get way over there?”
People need to be educated about climate change. Many of these people who need it the most, did not watch Live Earth because they were either not able to, or it was just not in their language.
I guess we’ll eventually find out whether the world is getting the message or not, but if we find out the hard way… I’m not so sure I want to be around. Recycle, re-use, reduce!! Please. It’s all so easy.
